Patrick Karimi

Patrick Ng’ang’a Karimi alias Ng’ash, started his art career as a self-taught artists as a member of Kuona Trust before he left Nairobi to work in rural Kenya. He later joined Kenyatta University in 1998 where he formally studied Fine Art on a part time degree program. He holds a Master of Arts Degree in Fine Arts, Painting option, and a Bachelor of Education Degree (Fine Art). Patrick is a full time art instructor at Kamwenja Teacher’s College in Nyeri (Kenya) Patrick has a unique bead-like painting technique inspired by the beautiful African bead work. He paints with acrylic paints on canvas using lollipop sticks and drinking straws rather than the conventional brushes. His subjects range from reflections on ordinary issues affecting past and contemporary society to complex mythological interpretations of abstract cosmological forces. He participated in several exhibitions in Kenya latest being at The Talisman and, Quepasa Restaurant, both in Karen, the Kenya Art Fair 2016 at the Sarit Centre, the ISK FOTA annual exhibition at the International School of Kenya, United Nations Recreational Centre,and at the Nairobi National Museum among others. Patrick’s paintings are in galleries and private collectors’ homes in Germany, Britain, France, and Sweden among others, with the bulk bought by Kenyan art lovers. Patrick aims at helping identify and nurture artistic skills amongst school going children and youths. Towards this end, he organizes and runs Kids Art Camps at the National Museums Nyeri branch in collaboration with other stake holders. These short courses are run during the school holidays. In addition, Patrick is the instructor at Sandai Ranch weekend painting courses targeting local and foreign tourists. Patrick intends to set up an art centre in Nyeri to enhance talent identification and development in the wider Mt. Kenya region.
