Nadia Wanjiru

Nadia Wanjiru Wamunyu was born in Nairobi, Kenya.  She started drawing as soon as she was old enough to hold pencils and water colors. Her mother bought her water colors and brushes and she started painting causally at home from age three years.  It was her way of withdrawing since most children could not understand her (Nadia lost her hearing at the age of three after a strong dose of antibiotics was administered by a doctor).  Her twin sister, Sadia, became the chatterbox of the family. Nadia sold her first piece of artwork to the proprietor of her primary school when she was only in Standard Six.  After that she was hooked, and started drawing everything she saw.  While in secondary school, her father encouraged her to pursue art seriously and helped her secure a mentorship with Patrick Mukabi, a renowned artist at the GoDown Art Centre in South B. Her preferred media are charcoal on paper and canvas, paints, pastels, coffee, inks, bleach, henna and chalk. Nadia has exhibited her work at numerous establishments, including the Nairobi National Museum, Village Market, Alliance Francaise, and various hotels and universities.  She aspires to have her own studio and venture into garden art and landscaping  while experimenting with other forms such as portrait, landscape, wild animals, culture, environment, illustration and murals.
